The City of Durham External Funding service aims to provide help, advice and support to maximise external funding for the Council and it's residents to help achieve the following aims and objectives set out in the Community Plan :-

"To make the whole of Durham district a better place to live, work and invest; where all residents are healthy and responsible citizens, and are actively involved in improving the area. We want to provide quality public services for all people in the district and narrow the gap between disadvantaged communities and those more fortunate."

The City of Durham Council values the work of community and voluntary organisations throughout the District and offers a free service to help them to secure additional external funding both to continue and to further develop the services they offer.

Services provided by our Funding Officer to both our service departments and to the wider community include :-

  • Promoting and marketing all external funding opportunities both through the web-page and through regular email updates (please pass through your details if you would like to be included on our electronic mailing list)
  • Providing expert advice on external funding sources including public and private sector sources, grant rates, eligibility and deadlines for submission
  • Supporting the development of agreed projects which contribute to the regeneration of the City and to local community development priorities
  • Developing and maintaining good relations with grant funding bodies, getting to know their programmes and helping them to meet their needs
  • Liaising with external funding bodies to determine the likelihood of success of funding applications (avoiding abortive work wherever possible)
  • Provide expert advice on how funding bids can be improved - maximising the chance of successful bids
  • Provide support and assistance to inform the project development process, helping to identify innovative approaches and ideas and helping to overcome barriers to project delivery
  • Proof reading service - to ensure submitted bids are accurate and complete
  • Help to present projects to funding bodies / project selection panels
  • Public Relations / Media - help to comply with funding publicity regulations (ie plaques, logo's, acknowledgements) and to widely communicate success stories to the local press / media.
