What is a Conservation Area?
A conservation area is an area which is designated as an area of special architectural or historic interest the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. For further information please contact the City Council's Heritage and Design Section.
How can I find out if I live in a Conservation Area?
You can find out if you live in a Conservation Area by contacting the City Council who have plans of all of the Conservation Areas within its district.
How does living in a Conservation Area affect me?
The City Council is under a general duty to ensure the preservation and enhancement of the Conservation Areas within its district. Conservation areas, because of their special character, are given greater protection. Please contact the City Council's Heritage and Design Section.
Can I carry out works to the trees in my garden if I live within a Conservation Area?
If you wish to apply to carry out work to a tree then you must first contact the City Council to find out if the tree is protected. If the tree lies within a Conservation Area then consent from the City Council must be obtained before any works can be carried out.
