Planning - local plans
The City of Durham Local Plan and the Local Development Framework are not produced in isolation. They link into a number of other plans and planning policy frameworks, from a national level right down to other plans produced within the district.
National planning policy
National planning policy is provided by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister through Planning Policy Statements, Planning Policy Guidance notes, and Planning Circulars. Many of these can be viewed on the ODPM's website
Regional plans
In the North East region planning policy is provided by Regional Planning Guidance 1 (RPG1). This is currently being replaced by a new Regional Spatial Strategy (View: Shaping the North East).

County Durham plans
The Planning Policy team at the County Council produce the Minerals Local Plan, and the Waste Local Plan for whole county which form part of the Development Plan for the City of Durham. These are currently being replaced by a new Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework. Durham County Council policy team also produced the County Durham Structure Plan on which the City of Durham Local Plan is based.

Other City of Durham plans
The Local Development Framework will complement the Durham District Plan (the Community Plan/Strategy) and build planning policies around it. Planning for the City Centre and Retailing will also build upon the Durham 2020 Vision project.
