Coxhoe Skidzone (Skatepark)
The Coxhoe Skidzone project was initiated by the young
people of Coxhoe, through consultation, taken on board by
the Coxhoe Community Partnership and funded through
Active England (Sport England and Big Lottery Funding).
As well as funding from Active/Sport England there has
also been support and help from match funders.
The City of Durham Council has now adopted the facility and along with the Skatepark (Skidzone) there is also a BMX (Trax) area for improving your bike skills and a Road Safety section (cyclone) which is used for cycling proficiency for Schools across Durham.
Since its opening in June 2005 the Skatepark has been a great success and attracts people from all over the North East of England to the facility. The Skatepark has 21 different pieces of equipment ranging from hipped quarterpipes to a 3-way volcano.
The park has a regular activity program including coached and supervised skateboard sessions, bike rides, girls' only sessions, demonstrations and amateur competitions. Helmets are available to hire from the Leisure Centre reception for £3.00 deposit which is refunded on return of the helmet.
Floodlight times on the Skatepark:
Summer: 7pm - 9pm
Winter: 4pm - 9pm
Supervised Skatepark Sessions:
During the months of February 2007 - October 2007 the
Skatepark has supervised sessions. They will run
on:
Tuesday: 5pm - 8pm
Thursday: 5pm - 8pm
Saturday: 2pm - 5pm
Kidzone Play Area
The Kidzone (play area) was designed by the young people
of Coxhoe as part of a competition. The area was designed
in 4 zones (a - 0-5's, b - 5-11's, c - 11 upwards and a
general seating area for parents) each area has equipment
appropriate to that age group.
Leisure Cycling Scheme
Over 40 bikes are now available for hire from Coxhoe
Leisure Centre as part of the new Leisure cycling scheme.
The cycles vary in size and style to cater for all ages
with bikes for adults, young people and toddlers, plus
adapted and adult bikes with trailers and caravans for
young passengers. The Leisure Centre also has a full
range helmets available.
The hire scheme was funded through Active England, a
partnership between Sport England and the Big Lottery
Fund, with support from the City of Durham Council and
Coxhoe Community Partnership.
If you are a Leisure Card member of any of the City's
Leisure Centres you can hire the bikes through the
scheme. Bikes must be booked with 24 hours notice and a
'Hire of Agreement' and 'Safety Checklist' completed
before the bikes can be released. The cycles must be
returned at least one hour before the centre closes and
helmets must be worn at all times.
