Race equality scheme
Under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, public bodies, including the City of Durham Council are required, in carrying out their functions, to have due regard to the need:
a) to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination; and
b) to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups.
A number of public bodies, including the City of Durham Council, are subject to specific duties in addition to the general duty. The specific duties require the Council to publish a Race Equality Scheme and to report on progress annually.
Regulations made under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and guidance issued by the Commission for Racial Equality set out the required contents of Race Equality Schemes.
The Council reviewed its Race Equality Scheme in 2006 and the current scheme covers the period April 2007 to March 2010. Please click on the links below to read the scheme.
