Underdog story? No it’s a real hit!

Tuesday 4 November 2008

A Dodgeball league is proving a hit with youngsters at Freeman’s Quay. Starting last month, the Friday night league is regularly attracting between 60 to 80 players.

Dodegball, the aim of which is to dodge soft balls thrown by the opposing team whilst also throwing balls at your opponents, is gaining in popularity across the UK after being put in the spotlight in the Ben Stiller film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

Tom Beales, community sports development officer who has organised the sessions is delighted with the success. "Dodgeball has a broad appeal as it can be played by anyone. Like many court games, it's good for fitness and agility too. We are really pleased with the numbers and are now expanding the programme to include coaching sessions for under 16s."

Junior Dodgeball coaching sessions for 7 - 11 years and for 12 - 16 years are available on Fridays 4-5pm and 5-6pm and cost £1.80 per session. A new league will start on Friday 20 February from 6 - 8pm. Players must be over 16 and the cost is £12 per team (minimum of 6 players).

To book a place at a coaching session or in the new league, contact Freeman's Quay on 0191 301 8306. For more information about dodgeball, contact Tom Beales on 0191 301 8425.
