Coronation Street to light up Christmas in Durham
Wednesday 29th October 2008
Once again the Durham City Christmas lights will be switched on by top soap stars this year with Steve and Becky making the trip from Weatherfield to Durham.
Almost as traditional as the lights themselves, bringing a top telly 'face' to Durham is becoming as regular as the hours of entertainment leading to the big moment.
The stars are brought to the City by Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, part of the Marketing Durham team that organise the festivities:
"The celebrity switch on is a great crowd pleaser as we have seen for the past four years. It was going to be difficult to top last year but I think we might just have done it with Simon Gregson and Katherine Kelly and the bonus of Natalie Anderson coming to entertain as well." Said Richard Toynbee, Manager of Prince Bishops Shopping Centre.
Simon had no hesitation about coming to the City "We are looking forward to coming to Durham having heard about the great reception previous Corrie people have had from the thousands of people who come see the light getting switched on."
The day starts at 1.00pm when the annual DUCK race see thousands of yellow plastic ducks "swim" down the river with the lucky duck owner adding to their Christmas holiday money to the tune of £1,000
With music and entertainment on the stage in the Market
place from 1:30pm, the highlight of the day comes at
around 5.45pm, when Simon and Katherine - better known as
"Steve and Becky" from the Street, meet the Mayor on
stage and flick the switch that will send thousands of
bulbs sparkling across the City Centre.
