HRH the Princess Royal pays special visit to Durham

On the early afternoon of Friday 26 September, Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal will be arriving at Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre to perform the official opening of Durham’s fabulous new pool and leisure facility.

Supporting Her Royal Highness will be paralympic athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson who will have just returned from Beijing.

Council Leader, Cllr Fraser Reynolds said today"Welcoming Her Royal Highness to perform the official opening will be a moment that Durham will treasure. This ceremony represents the beginning of what we hope will be a fantastic future for Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre."

Special arrangements and demonstrations are planned for the opening (more details to follow) as the Princess will be spending almost an hour on her tour of the building.Immediately after the opening, the Princess will be escorted by the Mayor of Durham, Cllr Grenville Holland up to Millennium Square for the unveiling of the bronze cast of The Journey by Dr Fenwick Lawson ARCA.

Dr Lawson will further honoured by City of Durham Council when he receives the Freedom of the City on Monday 10 November and a month later Sir Bobby Robson will be bestowed with the Freedom of the City on Monday 8 December. These events have recently been re-organised.
