Spud The Couch Potato Launches the Month of Free Cricket in Durham City

Wednesday 30 July 2008

Over the next 12 months ‘Spud the Couch Potato’ will be publicly put through his paces in everything from Street Dance to Salsasize and Spinning to Swimming.

Spud the Couch PotatoSpud, who is a 5 foot tall potato, will take on these challenges despite having retired from physical activity some years ago. He says he is very much looking forward to starting off with some low impact activities, ' The Active Durham campaign is just what I have been waiting for. I have often thought of trying a new sport but, frankly what with the credit crunch and all, activity has taken a bit of a back seat. As this is all free, I am more than willing to leave the couch at home and have some fun. I'll be keeping all my eyes open in this first month of Cricket as I don't want to be out for a duck!'

Active Durham is being funded by a £132,000 grant from Sport England and is further boosted by £40,000 from the Primary Care Trust. Each month has a different theme batting off in August with a series of family fun taster sessions at both Durham City and Brandon Cricket Clubs. What's more anyone attending any of the sessions will be automatically entered to a free draw to win a pair of highly sought after tickets to the England v South Africa T20 International at The Riverside on August 20th and kids go free to see the County team play at home.

A final word from Spud, 'to be honest it was easy to register I just logged on to www.durhamcity.gov.uk/Leisure and clicked on Active Durham. I'm taking the grand spuds with me, and have even swapped chips for mash on a bit of a pre cricket health kick. See you there.'

Places are still available: Cricket Taster sessions - Aug 4/5/6/8/ Brandon plus trip to Riverside for Durham v Kent Aug 7th.

Durham City Cricket Club taster days August 11/12/13 and 15. Plus trip Aug 14 Durham v Nottinghamshire (kids go free with paying adult. Transport provided)
