Opportunity to recognise unsung heroes

Monday 28th July 2008

Nominations for this year’s Community Citizen Award are now being taken. The award recognises and celebrates the work of the many community members, unsung heroes and dedicated volunteers who freely give up their time to work for the benefit of their local area.

From sports coaches and event organisers to fundraisers and volunteers, the awards scheme is open to residents of all ages from across the whole of the Durham City district. Nominations must be received from a third person, entrants can't nominate themselves. Each entry is assessed by a panel of independent judges.

Last year over 40 nominations were received, including, finalist, 15 year old Aaron Phillips of Sunderland Bridge who was nominated for his work towards his village's Northumbria in Bloom entry.

The overall winner, Ethel Cummings of Ushaw Moor, was presented with her award by the Mayor of Durham. She was also presented with a cheque for £500 to put towards a community group of her choice

Councillor Les Thomson, City of Durham Portfolio Holder for Communities said; "The standard of entries over the last two years has demonstrated that there are many people in the Durham district who are genuinely community spirited. We are delighted to offer the Community Citizens Award again this year. It helps people say a big thank you to those in their community who make a massive contribution to the local area, but whose work often goes unrecognised. "

As well as the overall winner, there will be six finalists for each neighbourhood zone in the City who will all receive £100 to put towards a community group of their choice. The closing date for this year's nominations is Tuesday 30 September 2008.
