Like a Duckling to Water Swimming Babies
Wednesday 23 July 2008
With the Olympics just around the corner Durham Leisure is doing its bit to make sure this region keeps providing top rate aquatic athletes for the future by starting them young.
Next week the Amateur Swimming Association's 'Ducklings' programme takes to the water at Freeman's Quay in Durham with the first in a number of taster sessions for babies from 5 months.
The sessions are designed to introduce very young children with a parent or carer to the wonders of water play. Trained Freeman's Quay staff will deliver specialist advice on methods of support and floatation and encourage children to play with water and toys though games and nursery rhymes.
The classes will take place in the complex's learner pool, which has a floating floor to ensure no one feels out of their depth.
Swimming Development Officer Laura Welford thinks there will be a high demand for the classes from both the City and surrounding area, 'We will have little ducklings sessions for babies from 5 months through to 2 years, and our junior ducklings are aimed at 2 to 4 year olds. Adult and child classes are brand new to Durham Leisure and we are delighted we can now provide this fantastic opportunity for both young children and parents or carers to experience fun in the water.'
The taster sessions run on Tuesday 29th July 2008 at 3pm and Thursday 31st July at 9am and 10am. Anyone wanting to book on can call Freeman's Quay staff on 0191 301 8306.Ends
