City opposes post office closures
Wednesday 24thJuly 2008
At the City of Durham’s full Council meeting this evening (Tuesday 22nd July) councillors agreed a Notice of Motion to oppose the two post office closures in Durham.
Cllr Carol Woods, Deputy Leader, put forward the Motion and said,
"The post offices at Gilesgate and Brancepeth are valuable amenities to local residents and many people will be disadvantaged by their closure.
"I know there are many post offices throughout the country on the hit list and all will be fighting against closure because local post offices so often cater for those in most need or have poor mobility.
"For people who only use post offices buy stamps, they can drive to any post office, but for an OAP who draws her pension every week and pays her bills, it's a lifeline and often a social occasion to meet and chat. "I'm delighted that my fellow colleagues are supporting me in this Motion and we will now be writing formally to the National Consultation Team to register our view that both these post offices should remain open."
