Assessment of the night time economy
Wednesday 9th July 2008
At Cabinet this week (Wednesday 9 July) members will discuss the results of a study to investigate the cumulative impact of licensed premises in Durham that says there are significant opportunities to proactively manage and control Durham’s night time economy.
Premier Licensing Consultants Ltd undertook interviews from a range of stakeholders representing a range of views across the community including the Police, Pub Watch, local residents in the City Centre, Durham Students Union and the local MP.
Deputy Leader, Cllr Carol Woods said today,
"The company has recommended that we should have a Nightsafe member Champion which I am happy to take on - the night time economy is very important to many businesses in the City Centre and there needs to be a balance between the pubs and the clubs attracting customers and how the local residents are allowed to get on with their lives.
"There has been a concentrated effort for all the agencies to work together more on these issues and we have had successes with a new late night bus service at weekends and the take up with Best Bar None. There's a lot more that we could all be doing together."
The consultants report contains a number of specific recommendations including the deregulation of a number of taxis in the City that is the subject of a separate survey and report.
