Three special people to Durham to be honoured

At Full Council on Monday 30 June there were 3 notices of motion recommending agreement to Sir Bobby Robson, Fenwick Lawson and Dr Bill Bryson all becoming an Honorary Freeman of the City.

Cllr Arnie Simpson proposed Sir Bobby Robson for his services to sport, charity and his ongoing commitment and support to the local communities of Durham.

Cllr Sue Pitts is proposed that the Council agree to invite Mr Fenwick Lawson to be admitted as an Honorary Freeman for his dedication to the arts and his contribution to the cultural heritage of the City of Durham and Deputy Leader, Cllr Carol Woods proposed Dr Bill Bryson for his services to the arts and tourism, education, and his international commitment and support to the City of Durham.

The Right Worshipful Mayor of Durham, Cllr Grenville Holland said at the meeting,"It is very unusual for 3 recommendations to be made in this way but these are unusual times. In the history of this council we want to mark this important year by honouring 3 special people to Durham and I am delighted to learn that all three are going to accept this honour."

Plans will be put in place to hold 3 separate ceremonies during the next nine months and further details of these events will follow in due course.
