Teams join forces to remove graffiti

Wednesday 18 June 2008

Over 20 volunteers from the energy efficiency organisation, Go Warm, gave their services for the day to help rid Durham of graffiti this Monday.

The City Council's neighbourhood warden team joined forces with the volunteers, who rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in at a graffiti site in the City Centre. The site was also given a general tidy up and lick of paint, with all brick work being treated with an anti-graffiti varnish. The varnish means that in future, local premises should just be able to wipe off the offending graffiti without the use of specialist materials.

Before the clean up

Belinda Snow, senior neighbourhood warden, said, "We're really pleased that Go Warm wanted to get involved in this environmental clean up and with their help we've cleaned up a big area. Most members of the public would not be aware of this graffiti site, but many of the problems in the City are located on items of historical value and we have to adopt a specific programme for the removal, which has cost implications. "

Karen Hindhaugh, director of Go Warm, said, "We wanted our team building day to involve something that would benefit the local community like graffiti removal or litter picks and we were happy to help City of Durham with this clean up."

Now that the graffiti has been removed, the warden team will monitor the site for new graffiti. They will photograph new graffiti tags to help identify perpetrators and provide evidence in criminal prosecutions.
