Shades Day support from the City Deputy Mayor
Wednesday 18th June 2008
The Deputy Mayor of Durham got his shades on this week all in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association's Shades Day.
Cllr Ron Dickie will be joining thousands of people across the county who will put on their shades and sun visors or sun hats to raise awareness of the need to protect their eyes when outside during the day.
The Deputy Mayor said:"This one simple action of putting on sun glasses, a sun visor or hat can protect eyes against harmful damage as exposure to sunlight can lead to certain eye conditions such as cataracts or Age related Macular Degeneration developing."

Research has shown that spending five or more hours outside every day in the summertime during teenage or young adult years increases the risk of long term damage to the eyes.
