Launch of the 2008 Durham Big Ride
Thursday 17th April 2008
The 2008 Durham Big ride has been launched with the organisers hoping for a repeat of last year’s success
The first Durham Big Ride was a huge success with over 700 people "getting on their bikes" and, not only seeing the fabulous countryside on the course, but getting a little more fit at the same time.
"Last year was a great event and we are looking to get even more people involved this September" said Ed Tutty, one of the organisers of the ride.
"Last year we saw hundreds, if not thousands of pounds raised for charities, some national and some local. What we would like to do this time is to try and put a number on it."
Alison Mosquera from Northumbrian Water said: "After the success of last year, we're delighted to be a main sponsor of the event again this year by keeping the cyclists hydrated. Drinking sufficient fluids will be an important factor in participants' enjoyment of the event, and we're putting in extra water stops this year to ensure that everyone has access to water at various stages during the ride."
County Durham Foundation brought over 80 people to the ride and hope to increase that this year to over 100 raising event more money than they did last time."Last years Big Ride was a fantastic opportunity for us to raise some money but also to raise the profile of County Durham Foundation locally. We were astounded how many people wanted to get involved; over eighty people raised money to help us support people in their local community. We had one team of children who managed to raise over £440!
I'm sure this year's ride will be just as successful and will help us to support even more good causes." Said Kate Brown, Marketing Manager for County Durham Foundation.
The Durham Big Ride will take place on 21 September at 9.30, start and finish at County Hall, Durham City. For more information on the event go to www.durhambigride.co.uk
