Recycling – killed by success

Friday 11th April 2008

With the new Greencycle contract in its first week of operation, Environment bosses at City of Durham Council paid tribute to residents for their outstanding efforts to increase their levels of recycling. The demand for collections using the new green reusable bags has been more than double the level anticipated.

Head of Environment & Leisure, Jeff Riddell said today, "I would like to inform our residents that recycling volumes have been so unexpectedly high, that in some cases collections have unfortunately been delayed by up to 24 hours. To help cope with the huge demand, some of our own vehicles are temporarily being used to help out in a number of areas, such as Esh Winning and Brandon.

"I would like to ask residents not to telephone Cityinfo if their recycling bag has not been emptied on time, or indeed if they have not received their bag yet. We know where the gaps are and we are working closely with the contractor to catch up with the backlog."

Mr Riddell concluded that Greencycle has agreed to put 3 additional squads out in Durham from next Monday which they feel will speed up the collection rates.
