Desperately Seeking Someone!

Tuesday 8th April 2008

On September the 28th 1932 The Right Honourable Lord Barnard opened the, then state of the art, New Public Baths and Washhouses in Durham. Nearly 76 years later, as the City of Durham prepares to open Freeman’s Quay, the hunt is on to find the lucky person who’ll get the chance to have a sneak preview at the new pool and leisure complex.

Were you in amongst the crowd of gathered guests and dignitaries watching the exhibition swim by J.G Hatfield? Headlined in the souvenir programme as 'England's Famous Swimmer,' the winner of 40 National Championships, and 3 times an Olympic Games representative! Did you see him take to the water at the opening of the 'First Class Baths'?

If you did we are looking for you! As preparations for the opening of the new £12.3 million pounds Freeman's Quay reach their final stages organisers want anyone who was at the launch of the City Baths to get in touch. If you can prove you were there in 1932 you will be invited to see the new cutting edge pool and leisure complex in Durham before it opens for use.

It might be that you have a photo, or the original 1932 programme signed by one of the exhibition swimmers. Find your proof and either write to us at Durham City News, 17 Claypath, Durham, DH1 1RH, or e-mail us at dcm@durhamcity.gov.uk.
