Historic Town Hall reopens its doors
Tuesday 18 March 2008
Durham’s Historic Town Hall has reopened its doors after being closed for a year. During that time it has been subject to major refurbishment works costing around £900,000.
The Right Worshipful Mayor of Durham, Cllr Bob Wynn officially reopened the Town Hall at 11am today, which was followed by a reception in the Main Hall.
The refurbishment features a new public entrance with improved access for all, including a lift taking disabled persons to the main floors, upgrading of the facilities within the building including the kitchen and enhanced security and fire detection systems. The new facilities will help enhance use of the historic building with corporate events, functions and even weddings being possibilities now.
Mike Lee, the council's technical manager said: "This is the most interesting and challenging project I've ever worked on. We've uncovered architectural features, hidden for decades, which have been restored and will further enhance one of Durham City's most important buildings. Everyone who has been involved, both council officers and the contractors, Vest Construction, has taken great satisfaction from the finished project."
The refurbishment work was finished a month ago and since then staff have been replacing the historical artefacts, and giving the place a comprehensive clean. The Burlison Art Gallery which was previously the Members Room is being returned to its original purpose as an art gallery and much of the militaria will be displayed in the Supper Room.
The present Mayor, Cllr Bob Wynn is pleased to be 'back in': "It's great that I can serve my last couple of months as Mayor in this historic building. The improvements add significant value to the building in terms of access, future use and the preservation of our local heritage. It's a great achievement for the residents of Durham."
The Town Hall is now open for business. Anyone who would
