Organisers hope to make the first charity event to be staged at Freeman's Quay and annual event following its hit success. More than 40 teams took part in the event over the weekend of the 22nd/23rd November 2008.
The Swimathon was a partnership between the City of Durham and Durham Rotary Club and resulted in dozens of enthusiasts swimming thousands of lengths and raising more than £5,000 for charities. Each team of 4 - 6 swimmers had 30 minutes to complete as many lengths as they could.
Funds raised are to be split equally between Treetops Children's Ward, St Cuthbert's Hospice, the County Durham Society for the Blind and Partially Sighted and the charity chosen by each individual team.
