As memberships at Freeman's Quay hit nearly 2,000 in just 5 months we can unveil the latest addition to the centres jam packed timetable, Aikido.
Dating back to the time of the Samurai, Aikido is a martial art centred on self defence and beginner's classes, for men and women over 18, are coming to Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre. The basics of the sport can be picked up quite quickly and instructors say it's a skill that could not only end up saving your life one day but build confidence as well.
The club organiser is Gareth Heslington, "We aim to teach everyone basic throwing and immobilisation techniques designed to overcome an attacker, in the early stages from grasps and strikes to the later stages of learning defence against weapons. I am really looking forward to meeting and training new people who want to give it a go at Freeman's Quay."
Instructor Stephen Beresford is a 2nd Dan Black Belt, "Aikido is about self empowerment and building confidence. We do teach the practicalities of disarming and practice with a harmless wooden knife called a tanto. However it's just as much about improving your self confidence and socialising with people with similar interests."
Freeman's Quay Manager Kay Smith says the new classes complement the range of activities the centre now offers, "2009 will be even bigger and better at Freeman's Quay. We are now well established with nearly 2000 fitness suite members and hundreds more swim only members. During 2009 we will continue to carry out regular reviews so that we provide a really exciting programme of sports, classes and activities that will have something for everyone."
Durham Leisure also offers medium level Aikido classes to progress on to and will host specialist's high level classes in the New Year. To find out more call Gareth on 07764 241062 or go to www.aikidonortheast.com
