TUMBLING
The tumbling section at Deerness has been in operation for just over a year now and is going from strength to strength. We have gone from 20 tumblers last year to 60 in the club as well as the recreational classes run through the centre.
Tumbling is an individual sport where you have a 25m x 2m sprung tumble track with a 10m run up and 5m landing area. Tumblers are required to perform 8 moves down the tumble track. The idea is to put as many somersaults and twists in the 8 moves as possible. The more you do the better your score. All regional and National Level tumbles are set tumble runs where everyone is marked out of 10 points. The higher level which is the age group tumbling is based on you building your own tariff as high as possible.
Tumbling will help you keep fit, help your co-ordination, increase your strength, but is also extremely exciting and lots of fun.
Glen Wharton who represented Great Britain for 13 years as a competitor, winning a World and European Bronze, as well as over 10 National titles, runs the tumbling section at Deerness. Since retiring from competing and moving into coaching Glen has produced over 10 international performers in Acrobatic Gymnastics and 2 international tumblers. Glen coaches from recreational to Elite level so all ages and abilities can benefit from Glen's expertise.
Anyone interested in tumbling please contact the Deerness Centre on 0191 3018303 or email Glen on glenwharton70@talktalk.net
