Spectacular Public Art Work for A Spectacular Public Leisure Complex

The specially commissioned public work of art which surrounds Durham’s new state of the art leisure centre, Freeman’s Quay, is complete. The ‘Durham Needles” flank the complex running in a sweeping wave reflecting the water theme and are coloured to mirror the environment.

Kick start 2009 with FREE coaching in everything from family football to karate and kick boxing. For the 4 weeks of January all 6 Durham Leisure Venues will help deliver free facilities and coaching in a total of 18 different sports from the traditional favourites to some new crazes

Freedom of the City for Sir Bobby Robson

Sir Bobby Robson was granted the freedom of the City of Durham this week for, not only his services to football but also his charity work which has raised over £1 million for a cancer treatment centre in the northeast.
Record Ticket Sales for World Class Gymnasts

The club behind the gymnastics talent that netted Team GB a World Title and Gold Medal earlier this year is celebrating the quickest sell out of tickets for its big annual fundraiser. This is the 5th year Deerness Valley Gym Club has staged Christmas displays but the seats sold out in just a few days. More than 100 members of Deerness Valley Gym Club, aged from just 3 to 23, will take part in the events which starts with The Mayor’s Appeal Night on December 9th.

Hundreds Cash in on Council’s Free Fitness Offer

More than 700 people are enjoying a free month of gym usage at Durham Leisure’s 5 Future Fitness centres. The figure is way above the number expected to take up the offer and is being hailed a huge success in the battle to beat obesity and to make a healthier city. Of those 700 more than 70 are under 16’s using the service’s Young Lifestyles initiative.

New Help for People Living with Multiple Sclerosis in Durham

People diagnosed with MS are being urged to take advantage of a special free information day designed to make sure they know about the help that’s on offer. The event, at Abbey Leisure Centre, takes place on Saturday November 8th and offers support and advice as well as complementary therapy and specialist exercise class tasters.

A Dodgeball league is proving a hit with youngsters at Freeman’s Quay. Starting last month, the Friday night league is regularly attracting between 60 to 80 players.
